Health authorities in several African countries are waging a battle against so-called “valtrex,” a potent antiviral medication that targets patients with co-occurring infections with the herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2.
Co-occurring herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2, called herpes labialis and varicella-zoster, are highly contagious and can cause visible blisters among people living with herpes.
They also have a “severe” link with herpes and are more likely to spread through sexual contact.
While viral illnesses are not a direct cause of living with HIV or other mental health problems, people with herpes may experience visible outbreaks of the cold sores, known as fever blisters, or shingles, sometimes accompanied by painful rash.
A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 are more likely to cause visible blisters among people living with HIV and other mental health problems.
“This is just the beginning,” says study author and professor in the Urology Department at the University of Virginia.

“When they’re coming in contact with people who are living with HIV, they can get a small outbreak, and you can see it in their eyes,” he says.
The cold sore virus, also known as HSV, is caused by the herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2.
Cold sores are typically a soft lump in the mouth or sore on the lips.
The HSV virus can spread through sexual contact, oral sex, or skin contact, causing visible blisters.
Cold sores may appear as a burning, peeling skin with red, swollen patches. People with cold sores may also experience fever.
“Cold sores usually last about five days,” says urologist Joshua Hamid, MD, director of the Center for Infectious Diseases at the Cleveland Clinic. “Most people with cold sores will develop a blisters around the cold sore.”
A painful blisters may be accompanied by pain, redness, and swelling, especially around the site of the cold sore. People with cold sores may experience burning, redness, itching, and fever.
“People with herpes are at a higher risk of having a visible outbreak of a cold sore,” says Hamid.
The first line of treatment for cold sores involves a cold sore vaccine, called acyclovir, or VACV.
This antiviral medication is sold under the brand names Zovirax and Famvir.
It also may be used to prevent herpes infections, Hamid says.
The most common form of treatment for cold sores is by vaccination, but Hamid says that cold sores can also be cured with a cold sore cure.
“People who have a cold sore will be able to do things that they would normally do, such as cutting or opening the mouth and throat to make the sores appear less severe,” says Hamid.
He says that while acyclovir is effective against HSV, it is not effective against varicella-zoster, a viral infection of the lips caused by the herpes simplex virus.
He says that acyclovir can be used to prevent outbreaks of genital herpes in people who have genital herpes and who can contract the virus.
Cold sores that are painful, red, swollen, or crusty are typically treated with creams or ointments to help stop the virus from replicating.
“If you have herpes, you will not get a cold sore,” says Hamid.
